Friday Family Fitness Fun - Week 2

This week I wanted to share with you my fitness story. Cue violins!

Before having Ted I was a comfortable size 10-12. I had a few wobbly bits but I was happy in my skin. I wore pretty summer dresses and shorts, thinking nothing of baring a bit of skin. I was 23 when I found out I was going to be a Mum and despite all the amazing things that come with it I have found myself feeling like a frumpy over weight Mumsy Mum and my self confidence has hit an all time low.

Where has this girl gone?
(and her abnormal arm?)

I have also noticed myself getting short of breath when doing simple activities and have a never ending list of ailments that really are getting me down. I put a lot of this down to being unfit and overweight. I am not going to lie, sometimes I get scared that I am putting my health at risk just because I am too lazy or 'can't find the time' to exercise.

I decided a few weeks ago that this was going to change. I no longer want to look in the mirror and hate my body or stand picking faults in my appearance. I also don't want to only take photo's from my shoulders upwards because I am afraid of showing my body to the world.

Time to make a change...

I know this series of posts is about Family Fitness but I just wanted to give you a bit of an insight into my personal story in the hope that I can help show other Mum's that it is important to take care of yourself, after all we are the centre of our families and a happy Mum makes a happy family!

I had a few options when it came to what to do next...

A. Wallow in self pity and eat some more junk food (Comfort eating is my biggest issue)
B. Exercise at home (try to stay motivated and not turn into a hermit)
C. Sign up to a Gym (and get out of the house at the same time)
D. Join a class (at £7 a session)

My options were there before me, I could stay at home where I would get distracted by household issues, spend £21 a month on just one class a week or sign myself up to for a monthly gym membership that includes classes as well as general gym and swim facilities. Comfort eating was not an option!

Settled on signing up to a gym I began to ask around to find where is the best place. My friend Linda recommended Virgin Active and after speaking to the lovely staff at Virgin I was offered a chance to try the gym for 3 months and share with you all how I got on.

The top selling point for me was how family oriented their gyms are. They have on site crèche's, amazing kids pools, Club V which runs a whole host of kids activities and of course plenty of baby friendly facilities.

I would be able to go along with Ted for a Mum and Baby swim session then he can play in the Ofsted registered crèche while I have some work out time in the gym. I couldn't wait to get signed up.

I had an induction where I got a tour of the gym and met one of the personal trainers Anni who showed me the equipment, unfortunately I am waiting for my doctors note before I can start training but that should be through soon and it is always best to get the all clear before going ahead (even if the doctors charged me £20 for it!) I was reassured that this is normally taken off the membership fee's by Virgin though so no worries there!

I can't wait to get training now and have a great exercise plan that Anni put together for me where I will be doing Tabata style training which is lots of short bursts of fast paced activities with rests in between e.g 20 seconds on 10 seconds rest...repeated for 4 minutes.

Ted and I have plans to swim at least once a week and I will also have one or two evenings a week which will get me out of the house for some alone time which I am looking forward to.

Family Fitness Outside of the Gym

We have been going on lots of little walks as a family lately even if it is just to the garden centre. Ted is also totally obsessed with football so having a kick about in the garden has become a regular occurrence which is keeping me on my toes and he is constantly on the go so not much to worry about with his fitness.

What activities have you all been up to as a family?

As I mentioned last week this linky is open until Tuesday so please do link up and spread some comment love, I would love to hear your stories!
